A full figure of Liberty is featured on the new quarters of 1916. The design is very popular with collectors and the series is collected in all grades. Liberty is holding an olive branch (peace) and shield (protection). She is ’stepping forward to the gateway of the country’ as describe by the mint. Historical context is WWI at the time and US involvement in keeping the country secure. Reverse is an eagle in flight surrounded by stars.
A second variety soon replaced the first. Part of 1917 production introduced changes to Liberty adding armor to her gown. Additionally, and easiest to identify the new variety, are the thirteen stars on the reverse were modified to 5 stars either side of the eagle and 3 below. These changes remained throughout the series. Mint and Mintmarks of the Standing Liberty Quarter Series
The need for quarters was met by three mints, Denver, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. All combined to produce over 226 million Standing Liberty quarters.
Numbers struck by each mint varied year by year creating both available and scarce date and mintmark combinations. Typical collections include all dates and mints and this demand identifies the scarce issues by higher values on the chart. San Francisco Mint
San Francisco mint began striking Standing Liberty quarters in 1917 of both varieties. Production was typically on average 2 million per year. 1927 is the low mintage year of 396,000 pieces, creating a scarce variety, and also the second lowest of the entire series.
Indicating the San Francisco mint is a small ’S’ mintmark left of Liberty’s foot near the date.Denver Mint
A great many of the Denver mint issue Standing Liberty quarters are the scarce variety for that year. Denver’s total number minted of the series is just over 29 million quarters the lowest total of the three mints. Mintmarks are very small; a magnifying glass is helpful. These mintmarks are necessary to identify when placing an accurate value on the coin.

Philadelphia mint is the main US mint, striking coins, assaying metals, and producing all dies used by other mints. Additionally, striking the largest number of Standing Liberty quarters. Philadelphia variety quarters are an affordable entry into the series. Two dates standout as scarce and high value, 1916 and 1921 both low production years. 1916 is key to the series only 52,000 minted.
Philadelphia did not use any mintmark. No mintmark in the space left of the date near the small star is a Philadelphia quarter. Step 2: | Grading Condition | Determine Value
Dealers and collectors look at the condition of coins very closely and determine the ’Grade’. This is done first before determining Standing Liberty quarter values. Standing Liberty Quarter Values are Conditional
As a coin circulates and wears each stage of wear is different and assigned a grade. A range of grades are used; from a heavily worn coin ’Good’ condition to one bright and new in ’Mint State’ condition.
Comparing your coins to the grading images below, notice how wear causes a different appearance to the coin. As example, when first minted, Liberty is holding a finely detailed shield. Wear reduces these details on and around the shield and the progression of wear helps identify an accurate grade. Certain design elements diminish or disappear when worn. Obverse: Features Identifying Mint State Grade: Reaching the high grade of Mint State defines the condition as no wear to the surface. Areas high in profile are examined to detect the smoothing and change in texture wear presents.
Liberty’s right chest is judged, fine grains to the metal and complete fine detail and no removal of metal indicates no wear to the surface.
A scarf is held in her right hand extending across Liberty to the shield. It is without any smoothness, remaining the same shine as metal above and below.
Examine her right knee for any signs of dulling to the metal, a sign of wear.
Reverse: Features Identifying Mint State Grade: Luster that produces the ’shine’ of a mint state grade coin is a fine texture.
Eagles left wing is prone to removal of original luster. Towards the center of the wing, confirm a consistent texture remains.
A high relief contour is part of the Eagle’s left wing from the tip to the body of the eagle. Judge the surface along the upper edge to detect smoothing caused by wear.
Fine line ridges are center details to feathers, these are bright and the same texture as the rest of the wing.Extremely Fine Grade: Standing Liberty Quarter
Obverse: Features Identifying Extremely Fine Grade: An Extremely Fine condition quarter features most major designs elements bold and finer details slightly faded.
Liberty, from head to toe, is lightly worn on the very upper areas. Her right chest is smooth but does not connect with the scarf just below.
A good indication of minimal wear is the scarf remains full with upper and lower lines as it crosses Liberty.
A small flat area is noted on Liberty’s right knee, thigh, and continues to her toe. This flat area is confined to just the upper contour of the leg leaving depth to the sides.
Reverse: Features Identifying Extremely Fine Grade: A large amount of wing detail remains, presenting a bold eagle design.
A key focal point to identify the Extremely Fine grade is the Eagle’s left wing. Towards the front edge of the wing, lines representing each feather remain just visible. These lines identify a row of feathers different than the large flight feathers.
A well detailed left wing remains with all feathers separate and bold.
Tail feather design is worn across the top edge with one or two feather lines remaining.Fine Grade: Standing Liberty Quarter
Obverse: Features Identifying the Fine Grade: Wear has removed most of the highest points of the design, leaving a lack of detail.
Although the sides of Liberty remain raised, across her center is now flat. A broad flat surface is continuous from Liberty’s toe to neck line.
A once defined scarf from hand to shield is now indistinct across Liberty.
Keeping this coin within the Fine grade is the shield edge remains separated from Liberty.
Reverse: Features Identifying the Fine Grade: All high contour areas of the Eagle’s wing are now flattened.
The left wing is lacking most inner feather detail. Edges of feathers are bold only at the very ends.
Leading edge of the right wing is now noticeable flat. Flatness is also showing at the tips of the feathers. Raised edges separating feathers are distinct only within the center of the wing.
A full rim remains with letters of the legend bold. Stars are raised from the field.Good Grade: Standing Liberty QuarterQuarters Worth More Than Face Value
Obverse: Features Identifying the Good Grade: Areas of the coin have now become hard to recognize. Wear has removed enough metal to flatten all high point contours.
Liberty is worn smooth over her entire center, leaving only gown detail towards her feet.
Shield is fully connected as a flat area to Liberty, only slight detail remains of the upper edge to shield.
Lettering is readable. Letters of ’Trust’ are becoming weak.
Reverse: Features Identifying the Good Grade: Most details to the eagle are worn smooth.
A complete outline to the eagle remains. Feathers to the left wing are now smooth, no edged details remain.
Central feather detail is just visible to the right wing. Ends to the feathers are all blended.

Quick Check: Is your coin Bullion or Collector; Standing Liberty Quarter Value? The condition of the date area is a solid indicator defining a bullion or collector piece. 1925 saw a modification in the design, by recessing the date and improving its ability to remain readable.
The majority of bullion quality and value quarters are of the 1925 to 1930 sub-variety with recessed date. 1964 was the last year that 90 percent silver Washington quarters would be made for circulation. This was due to the rising price of silver, with a value that exceeded face value of the coins that it was in. Beginning in 1965, the United States Mint would begin making quarters from a 75 percent copper, 25 percent nickel composition. It would also cease placing mintmarks on coins in an attempt to discourage collecting. Further punishing coin collectors for the coin shortage, which was caused by silver hoarders, not numismatists, the Mint would not offer proof sets from 1965 thorough 1967, instead offering special mint sets, which mainly coins of lesser quality than proof coinage. Regular proof sets – and mintmarks – resumed in 1968.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Emirates Airline President Tim Clark on Wednesday said Boeing Co’s 777X might not enter into service with airlines until 2023 or even later, amid uncertainty over the development timeline of Boeing’s biggest twin-engine jet and when it will be certified.
Boeing has been developing the widebody jet, a new version of its popular 777 aircraft, with the goal of releasing it in 2022, already two years later than planned.
The 777X will be the first major jet to be certified since software flaws in two Boeing 737 MAX planes caused fatal crashes and prompted accusations of cozy relations between the company and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
’It is a question of when that aircraft is going to be completed and certified and offered for entry of service. That could be ’22, could be ’23, it could be even longer,’ Clark told Reuters in an interview.
’So we will just wait and see as to what Boeing will do with regard to that and we will take a view as to how they fit into the fleet at that particular time.’
Boeing could not be immediately reached for comment.
Clark said he expected regulators to place the new jet under higher level of scrutiny as a result of the MAX crisis, and Boeing’s Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith has warned the market entry would be influenced by the requirements of regulators.

’This is essentially a modern 777, which of course is a workhorse for international travel and it has been a thoroughly reliable, excellent bit of Boeing design so I don’t see why the 777X should be any different,’ Clark said.
European regulators have said in particular that they will subject the 777X to extra scrutiny after the fatal crashes prompted the 20-month grounding of the 737 MAX.
The MAX crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia killed 346 people within five months in 2018 and 2019 and triggered multiple investigations and weakened U.S. influence over global aviation.
Emirates originally ordered 150 of the 777X series, which seats up to 406 people, and now has 126 on order. Analysts say the COVID-19 crisis has clouded the demand for such big jets.
The plane was originally due to enter service with Emirates in June 2020.

Emirates is reconsidering its commitment to Boeing’s newest jet, the 777X. The Dubai-based carrier is considering swapping as much as one-third of its order of the 777X for the smaller Boeing 787 Dreamliner, according to a person familiar with the matter.Popular Searches
As first reported by Bloomberg, Emirates is looking to swap between 30 and 45 of its 115 777X orders for Dreamliners. The move would be a troubling one for Boeing and its 777X program, as Emirates is the largest customer of the yet-to-be-launched aircraft.
Emirates’ move isn’t the first of its kind. Boeing indicated on Monday that it’s at risk of losing nearly 40% of its 777X orders because of delays. With the 777X now slated to debut in 2023 — more than two years later than previously expected — customers are permitted to walk away from their contracts.

This week, Boeing lowered the backlog of the 777X to just 191 aircraft, according to a regulatory filing. That number, much lower than the 309 firm orders that are listed on the planemaker’s site. Boeing said in an email that the drop is the result of an accounting standard that requires sales at risk of not happening to be removed from the backlog.
In its fourth-quarter earnings call, Boeing detailed that it had taken a $6.5 billion charge for delays to the 777X. The delay could bring additional losses to Boeing when it considers cancellations, production cuts and flight-testing risks.
Emirates, which was one of the first 777X customers, declined to comment on the report that it’s looking to drop some of its 777X order in favor of the 787 Dreamliner.
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to set back the aviation industry, airlines have largely set aside their long-haul routes. As such, the demand for wide-body, twin-aisle planes has decreased — including for the future of the 777X, which is set to be the heir to the superjumbo Boeing 747. Orders for wide-body aircraft with both Boeing and Airbus are expected to be the last to recover from the pandemic-spurred drop in demand. Boeing has already said that it’s cut the output of its Dreamliners.
“The decline in backlog in the fourth quarter reflected aircraft order cancellations and removal of aircraft orders from our backlog due to the ASC 606 accounting standard, including our most recent assessment of 777X backlog due to the revised schedule,” Boeing Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith said on a call with analysts last month.Boeing 777x Emirates Fleet
Boeing saw a similar slump in orders for the 737 MAX aircraft following its nearly two-year worldwide grounding. More than 1,100 orders for the plane were removed from Boeing’s backlog of the 737 Max.

We should really be asking where the looser machines are. But let’s bow to common usage and continue using the term loose machine.So, what is a loose machine?
Quite simply, a loose machine is a machine that has a higher long-term payback percentage than another machine. The loose machines in acasino are those machines that have the highest paybacks. These are the machines that will take the smallest bites out of your bankroll in the long run. No wonder slot players areconstantly searching for them.
Over the years, players have developed a number of theories about finding loose slot machines. Casinos place loose machines near the entrances, for example, so passersby can see playerswinning and are enticed to enter the casino and try their luck. The loose machines are also at the ends of the aisles to draw players into the aisle, where the tight machinesare.
And, of course, a loose machine is always surrounded by tight machines. You never have two loose machines side by side. That’s done for players who like to play more than onemachine at a time. If they should happen to stumble upon one of the loose machines, they’ll be pumping their winnings from it into the tight machines around it.
More theories. The machines near the table games are tight because table games players don’t want to hear a lot of bells and buzzers going off and happy slot players whooping it up aftera big win. Another reason the machines near the table games are tight is because table games players will occasionally drop a few coins into a slot machine and they don’t expect to winanything, so why give them a high payback.
Similarly, the machines near the buffet and show lines are tight. People waiting in line are just killing time and getting rid of their spare change. They’re not going to play for along time or develop a relationship with those machines, so the machines can be like piggy banks – for the casino! Money goes in and rarely comes back out.
The machines near the coin redemption booths, on the other hand, are loose. Players waiting in line for coin redemption are slot players and the casino wants them to see other playerswinning. Seeing all those players winning will make them anxious to get back on the slot floor to try their luck again.
Finally, finding loose machines in highly visible locations is most likely. Again, casinos want players to see players winning and be enticed into trying to get a piece of the casino’sbankroll themselves.
These are the theories I can think of off the top of my head. Maybe you know of some others. Most of the theories have a basis in psychology. When we see others winning, we’llwant to play too because 1) we’re greedy, 2) we’re envious, or 3) we see that at least some machines really do pay off and if we keep trying we might find one too.
Based on my own discussions with slot directors, interviews with slot directors, and seminars I’ve attended, I don’t think these theories are relevant in today’s slot world. To see why,we have to look at how slot machines and slot floors have changed.
Picture a slot floor of 10-20 years ago. Even if you don’t go back that far, I’m sure you’ve seen pictures on TV or in books. The slot machines on a casino floor in that era arearranged in long rows, much like products out for sale in a supermarket aisle. There’s no imagination used in placing the machines on the floor. The machines are placed using cold,mechanical precision.
On page 193 in Slot Machines: A Pictorial History of the First 100 Years by Marshall Fey, there’s a great picture of Bally’s casino floor in Atlantic City that illustrates my point. Thepicture shows hundreds of slot machines all lined up in perfect rows like little soldiers. Compare that image with the slot floor layout at a casino that was designed in the last five or so years. Studies have shown that players feel very uncomfortable playing in longaisles. They feel trapped when they’re playing in the middle of a long aisle, particularly if the casino is crowded. As a result, modern casinos have shorter aisles and when a long aislecan’t be avoided, it will be wider than others so players won’t feel like they can’t get out.
One of the finding loose machines theories has casinos placing loose machines at the ends of aisles to draw people into the aisles. Having shorter aisles means having more machinesat the ends of those aisles. Can all of these machines be loose?
In addition to being uncomfortable in long aisles, players are also uncomfortable being put out on display for the other players. Perhaps they feel like they might become a target iftheir good luck is too visible.
One slot director I heard speak said that he tried to create “comfortable niches” for his players. Instead of being in a fish bowl, visible to most of the slot floor, players in hisniches can be easily seen by only the other players in that niche.
Another theory about loose machine placement is that casinos place them in highly visible areas. Modern casinos still have highly visible areas, but the areas are visible to a smallernumber of players. A loose machine in this area will influence fewer players than before.
The last change in the slot floor that I want to mention is perhaps the biggest change of all. Casinos used to have hundreds of slot machines. Now they have thousands. Oneslot director in Las Vegas said in an interview a few years ago that with so many machines on his floor, he didn’t have time to micro-manage them. He and his management decided the holdpercentage they wanted for each denomination and he ordered payback programs close to that percentage for his machines. Furthermore, he said this was the common practice in LasVegas.
As much as the slot floor has changed, the changes on the floor are dwarfed by the changes in the slot machines themselves. One thing that struck me about that picture of Bally’s is howall the machines look alike. They really do look like soldiers being inspecting, all standing at attention and in identical uniforms, or like rows of indistinguishable corn plants. In fact, it looks like there are only three different games in the 10 machines in the first row in the picture. Granted, the majority of the machines in Bally’s casino were Ballymachines. Still I’m surprised by the lack of variety in the machines in the front row in the picture.
I heard that one theory why Americans have gotten heavier is that we have access to a wider variety of foods today than we had before. When meals consisted of the same thing time aftertime, it was easy to pass up second helpings of gruel and eat just enough to no longer be hungry. But now we have Chinese one night, Mexican the next, followed by Thai, burgers, pizza,and pasta -- it’s easy to overeat on our culinary trip around the world.
Just as variety in food creates desire, so does variety in slot machines. “Hey, I used to watch The Munsters all the time. I’ll try that machine.” “I never miss TheApprentice. I’ll give that machine a go.” “I played Monopoly all the time as a kid.” “I have a cat and a dog and a chainsaw and a toaster.”
Not only is there more variety in themes on machines, there’s also more variety in paytables. Back in the 1920s, a revolutionary change in slot machine design was paying an extra coin fora certain combination. Adding a hopper to the machine in the electro-mechanical era made it possible for the machine to pay larger jackpots itself instead of requiring a handpay from ajackpot girl. Adding a computer to the slot machine made it possible for today’s machines to pay modest jackpots of a few thousand coins all the way up to life-changing jackpots ofmillions of dollars.
The computer also makes it possible to add more gimmicks to machines. Gimmicks like “spin-til-you win,” symbols that nudge up or down to the payline, haywire repeat-pays, and double spinall add more variety and interest to the games.
Today’s machines are immeasurably more interesting and fun to play than those of even just a decade ago. Each new generation of machines has crisper graphics and better sound than theprior generation. Slot designers are working overtime to devise compelling bonus rounds that will keep players playing for just one more crack at the round. How many people playingWheel of Fortune are trying to win the jackpot? Not many. Most people keep playing to get one more spin of the wheel.
Slot directors today don’t need to pepper their slot floors with loose machines to stimulate play. Today’s machines themselves generate more desire to play than seeing a player doingwell.
Now I’ll finish our discussion of where slot directors place loose machines with some additional thoughts, with a few anecdotes I’ve heard at slot seminars, and with what I think will be thefinal nail in the coffin of loose machine placement philosophies.
One of the placement theories says that tight machines should be placed near the table games because the table games players don’t like a lot of noise while they’re playing. Have the peopleputting forth this theory ever been near a craps table? A craps table with a shooter on a hot roll has to be one of the loudest places -- if not the loudest place -- in the casino. Crapsplayers can be a boisterous lot even when the table isn’t hot. Okay, I can see players needing peace and quiet at blackjack tables (It’s difficult to count cards even in a quiet casino.), butnot at craps, roulette, Let It Ride, and other tables. In any case, the casino can adjust the volume level on a machine. The slot director can put a very quiet, loose machine near the tablesand not disturb a single table games player.
Another problem with following a loose machine placement philosophy is that it limits the flexibility slot directors have in moving their machines around on the slot floor. If the directors aregoing to give up a little bit in payback on some machines, they certainly will want to get their money’s worth and ensure that these machines are in locations where they’ll be played, be seenbeing played, and entice other players to play. Slot floors have only a limited number of high visibility areas. Slot directors won’t want to waste any of their high-paying machines in the morenumerous less visible areas, where the machines won’t be encouraging other players.
Now I’d like to share some anecdotes I’ve heard at panel discussions during the big gaming show (first the World Gaming Congress, then the Global Gaming Expo) that’s held in Las Vegas eachyear.
First, one slot director described an experiment he conducted in his casino. He had a carousel of 5 Times Pay machines that all had the same long-term payback. He ordered new chips to lower thepayback percentages on a couple of the machines to see if anyone would notice. The machines with the lower long-term paybacks received just as much play as the higher-paying machines. Noplayer, furthermore, ever complained that some of the machines in the carousel were tighter than others.
In another seminar, a slot director shared the philosophy he used to place some machines that he had inherited from another property. These machines, he said, had lower long-term paybacks thanthe payback he usually ordered for machines on his slot floor. He said, ’I read the same books that the players read. I put these lower payback machines in the spots that the books said shouldhave the high payback machines.’
My last anecdote is about a decision made by the slot director at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas many years ago. He was ordering 10 Times Pay machines for his slot floor and he was concerned aboutthe low hit frequencies available for those machines. (Machines with multiplying symbols tend to have low hit frequencies, and usually the higher the multiplier, the lower the hit frequency.)The slot director was afraid that his players would think the machines were very tight because they hit so infrequently. He said that he ordered higher paybacks than he usually does for thosemachines in an attempt to offset the low hit frequency. The machines would still have a low hit frequency, but at least the average value of a hit would be a little higher than if he hadordered a payback percentage nearer the percentage he usually ordered. He hoped that would be enough to keep his players from thinking these were tighter than the other machines on his slotfloor.
Although I think these anecdotes are the exceptions that prove the rule that some casinos at least order the same long-term paybacks for machines of a particular denomination, there is evidencethat some casinos may not. In the first edition of Casino Operations Management, for example, Kilby and Fox list a number of “general philosophies that influence specific slot placement”including: “low hold (loose) machines should be placed in busy walkways to create an atmosphere of activity” and “loose machines are normally placed at the beginning and end of trafficpatterns.”
They then say that “high hit frequency machines located around the casino pit area will create an atmosphere of slot activity.” I’m not sure whether they’re saying high hit frequencyshould or shouldn’t be placed near the pit. In any case, note that one philosophy said that loose machines create an atmosphere of activity and another said that high hit frequency machinesalso create an atmosphere of activity. This is the perfect segue into what I think puts the final nail in the coffin about loose machine placement theories.
There is no correlation between long-term payback and hit frequency. A low hit frequency machine can have a high long-term payback. High hit frequency machines, in addition, can have lowlong-term paybacks. Larry Mak, author of Secrets of Modern Slot Playing, recently queried the Nevada Gaming Control Board to find out the payback reported on penny machines. The Board said itwas 90.167%. Most of the penny video slots have very high hit frequencies, yet the overall average long-term payback is very low.
The usual reasoning behind putting loose machines in highly visible areas is so slot players can see other players winning. Maybe we should be more precise here and say that players will seeother players hitting and assume that they are winning because they are playing loose machines. But because there’s no correlation between hit frequency and long-term payback, these players canactually be playing machines with low long-term paybacks.
I don’t put much stock in loose machine placement theories, but I do believe slot directors may follow a hit frequency placement philosophy. Slot directors may try to place high hit frequencymachines in visible areas to encourage play. This philosophy says and implies nothing about the long-term payback of the machines.

’It represents the great things we can do as a company,’ said 777X marketing director Wendy Sowers. Boeing says it has sold 309 of the plane - worth more than $442 million each at list prices. Meanwhile, the European Union on Jan. 27 granted the planemaker the regulatory approval to bring the 737 Max airplanes back to the skies. US regulators have already lifted the ban on the 737 Max. As of Jan. 25, Boeing delivered over 40 of its 737 Max aircraft, the company said.
The 737 Max had been grounded for a 20-month period, following two fatal crashes.
Following the quarterly results, Cowen & Co. analyst Cai Rumohr reiterated a Hold rating on the stock with a price target of $225.
“777X pushout charge & expected continuing high abnormal production charges are key negatives in the Q4 release; continuing plan to hike 737 to 31/month in early 2022 is somewhat encouraging. Investors also will focus on 787 manufacturing issues, preventing deliveries,” Rumohr wrote in a note to investors.
The rest of the Street is in line with Rumohr’s outlook with a Hold consensus rating. That’s based on 8 analysts recommending a Buy, 9 analysts suggesting a Hold and 4 analysts suggesting a Sell. The average analyst price target of $229.56 implies 18.3% upside potential to current levels.

“Do you know what they call the Boeing 777 over at Air France?” said Yves Galland, former CEO of Boeing France, in an interview. “Cash machine.”
It’s a cash machine for Boeing, too, which has sold more than 2,000 of the various 777 models since the 1990s. That makes the “Triple Seven” the most popular wide-body aircraft of all time — an even better seller than the venerable Queen of the Skies, the Boeing 747, despite having been in airline service for half as long.

The 777 now comes in a new form: the 777X, which flew for the first time in January 2020, becoming the largest twin-engine airplane ever to fly. You can expect to see it flying passengers this year, with Emirates. The newest 777 will be easy to spot around airports, thanks to its unique folding wingtips, a first in commercial aviation. Less visible but equally important are the wings made from composite materials and more efficient (and huge) General Electric engines, both instrumental in making the plane cheaper to fly than the current 777-300ER model.
“777X” is what Boeing calls the plane, but it comes in two variants that will be sold as the 777-9 and smaller 777-8. Only the 777-9 has been built so far.

The 777 was Boeing’s first fly-by-wire aircraft, meaning computers read the pilots’ inputs and translate them to movement of the flight-control surfaces — an innovation pioneered in commercial aviation by the Airbus A320 in the 1980s. The first 777 took to the air in 1994, and it has since become a mainstay of airlines on every continent. You can find it doing domestic runs in Japan with 500 passengers in high-density seating, or shuttling between London and New York with American Airlines and British Airways, or doing 16-hour ultra-long-haul flights.
It’s an extremely versatile airplane, which is why it’s been so successful. It may not be as loved as the 747, but you have a very good chance of finding yourself on one: the three major legacy airlines in the U.S. all flew it at one time or another. Delta retired its 777 fleet in October 2020 because of the coronavirus-related drop in demand.
Your packages also probably ride in a 777, as FedEx flies the cargo-only version. More than 1,600 had been delivered as of December. About half are the 777-300ER model.

Cash machine or not, though, Boeing is engaged in an epic battle with Airbus, and had to come up with a response when its rival launched the A350-1000. The European plane is of similar size to the 777-300ER, but gives airlines better economics. The cornerstone of Delta’s long-haul fleet is now the A350-900.
“Boeing had to replace the 777-300ER in response to the plane, which is more than 20% more economical,” said Scott Hamilton, an industry expert and editor of Leeham News, in an email.

Enter the 777X.777X, aka the 777-8 and 777-9
The aircraft is essentially a derivative of the current 777s, with a new wing and engines. They are stretch models seating 50-60 more passengers than previous versions. The 777-8 will be 229 feet; the 777-9 will be 251 feet, 9 inches, about one foot longer than the current longest-airplane record holder, the 747-8. The current longest Boeing 777, the 300ER, is 242 feet long.
Delivery of the aircraft was originally slated for 2020, but engine issues have pushed that back to 2021. According to Leeham News, the Federal Aviation Administration may decide that the 777X is different enough from current 777s that it must be certified as new type, rather than a derivative. That would add time, and costs, to the certification process. One way or the other, though, you’ll see the 777X in service soon.
According to list prices, the 777X goes for up to $442.2 million a unit, although airlines almost always get discounts. According to Boeing and the airlines, customers include Lufthansa, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, ANA, Cathay Pacific and British Airways.
The 777-9 is designed to carry around 400 passengers, although some customers will likely install true first-class cabins, reducing overall capacity. The Boeing 777X models will sport folding wingtips, a first in commercial aviation. The reason? The folding wingtips will allow the aircraft to fit into gates where the existing models of the 777 can go, despite a longer wingspan. The 777X has a wingspan of 235 ft 5 in, but with the wingtips folded up that decreases to 212 ft 9 in, the same as current 777s.
An increased wingspan produces extra lift, which reduces fuel burn. The 777X has the largest wingspan of any Boeing commercial jet, in fact. Besides that wingspan, the reason Boeing can claim the 777X will lower costs for airlines compared to the A350 is because of its engines.
The GE9X is the largest turbine jet engine ever made. It also holds the Guinness World Record for the most thrust, at 134,400 pounds. Because of a larger fan at the front and other innovations, the GE9X burns about 10% less fuel than the GE90 engines that power the existing Boeing 777. The engine has 16 fan blades, the lowest of any wide-body aircraft, according to GE — which makes it lighter than the GE90. Lighter means less fuel burn.
The 777X also borrows from the lessons and technology of the 787 Dreamliner, in particular its composite wings. Unlike the Dreamliner, however, the composite wings for the 777 are built in-house by Boeing, rather than by subcontractors in Japan.
And the 777X will keep the 777’s aluminum frame instead of the 787’s composite frame. Still, it’s lighter than its predecessor: the 777-9 has a maximum takeoff weight of 775,000 lb, same as the 777-300ER, but it’s significantly larger. That means airlines can carry more passengers and cargo, at a lower cost.Windows: bigger and no shades, like the Dreamliner
For passengers, the biggest innovation in the 777X may be the windows. Clients can order windows with the same electrochromic technology (using electricity to change the color and amount of light that passes through the window via a gel-medium) as the Dreamliner. That means no window shades: they will be dimmed electronically, at the press of a button. All windows, including the traditional ones with window shades, are also 20% larger than the current Boeing 777 models.

I have read every tome written by Scoblete and have to admit it was his books (and Yuri’s) that got me going in the game. When I go to the book store now, I can’t even buy a book as I have purchased every book written on craps in the last twenty years. Patrick are the best, Scoblete is second. And a guy named Ellison wrote a good one too. Personally, I believe that DiceSetter.com site and the installments by Heavy and Mad Professor are the best source of info ANYWHERE. Come on, Heavy, get that book out..I’ll hawk ’em for ya!

Roadrunner, your mentioning of the Do’s and Don’ts, reminded me of the Professor’s Playbook of Playing4keeps.com. The information contained here works for a nickel bettor, or you high rollers. I especially like the way the pass line strategy kicks-ass on a good shooter and all you have to do is follow his easy to remember bet progression. My bias for the worst? Too many of the carps books pack complicated ways of play, for that ’what if’, specific conditions. They just don’t make sense to me. It took me only a few winning sessions to believe in the Do’s and Don’ts. And yes, the don’t pass and don’t come betting plays are very smart too. A complete package. (self published)

Best dice book I have run across is ’Dice Doctor’ by Sam Grafstein. This book gives very good money management techniques, strategy plays for do’s and don’t’s and has a smattering of stories. I use several techniques he purports in the book for my play.
Worst is something that just came out. ’50 Years At The Craps Table’ by Malcolm Jay. This guys claim to fame is ’Bet the pass line and take full odds and if it is really going well make a couple of come bets with full odds’. I thought I saw several inaccurate statements but was positive about only one. Don’t waste the $12 on this one.

I started out with an old one ’The Winners Guide to Dice’ by John Savage, copyright 1974. It was a good primer for me back in the late 70’s and I am rather attached to it even though it’s very basic.
I like both Frank Scoblete and John Patrick but I would have to go with ’John Patrick’s Craps (So You Wanna Be a Gambler).’ I learned a lot over the years with that one.
The worst is probably ’Winning Casino Craps’ by Edwin Silberstang. don’t think I marked a page in the book and wondered why I bought it after the fact.

Over the years I’ve found that you have to merge a gambling approach with your own personality and budget. Some people have patience, some don’t, and various approaches need to be tailored to the individual. what works for you may not work for me. It doesn’t mean I can’t learn from you and others, it’s just that I have to take all of the information and make it a part of ME. what you’ll find is that a person’s greatest strength is also their greatest weakness.

I’ve got to go with John Patrick’s two books. I have learned so much from reading them and reread the advanced book a couple of times a year. After reading Johns books I finally realized how to play the whole game of craps. I haven’t read any dice book that tells the story of the whole game like these do. If you want to learn the game these are a must read. I bought Sam Grafstein’s book in September and did a quick scan of it before I went to Vegas, but haven’t gotten back to it yet. I did like what I read but didn’t have time to really get into it.

As to the subject of gambling books, I agree with (most) of the earlier posts, with the codicil that while I admire John Patrick for his life long commitment, (let alone his verified success), I do get tired of his constant harping on bank roll management. A few references would be sufficient, however, it seems to me that all of his books are like a sermon – and to someone who has been married four times, (all in Vegas about every six to seven years!), a sermon doesn’t hit home really well – but the general content of his books is top flight.
I also play a lot of poker, with “Super System” by Doyle Brunson being something that can be read every six months and still learning from it.
Most all of David Sklansky’s books are thought provoking, and, when not in collaboration with Mason Malmuth, not so analytical that you feel that a PHD in mathematics is a prerequisite.
The series by Tom McEvoy and T.J. Cloutier are about the best around for books by players who “have done it, and ARE doing it”. Just a few thoughts…

I’ve enjoyed most of the Scoblete books through the years - some interesting insights there. However, I think he often ’sells out to the other side’ with his magazine articles.
Someone mentioned the Feinberg books. I agree that they are poorly written. Still, the content has some value.
An unfortunate side bar to publishing and the gaming industry - at present there is only one New York publisher that will even take on a gambling book. Those presses that will handle this type of material are usually ’royalty paying’ presses - which means you don’t get a dime for your book until it (1) earns out - meaning all of the editing, production, printing and distribution costs are recouped - and (2) shows a profit. At which point you might earn - oh, a buck and a half a copy for a book with a $19.99 retail price.
Some don’t even pay that. They pay the author in ’copies’ of his own book - which he can then take and sell for $20 a copy - and that’s how he gets his money. That’s why you see a lot of gaming authors hawking their books directly through their web-sites rather than through bookstores, etc. They’re trying to get paid. Last of all come the self-published or vanity books. This is the one where the author pays for all of the up front costs himself and orders - say - a run of 500 books at a cost of $5.00 each or so. So he fronts $2500 to get the books printed - and then sells them himself - again, thru web sites, personal appearances, seminars, etc. A very tough way to go.
Now, MOST of the gambling books on the market fall into these last two categories. And since most are written by guys whose strength is something other than English 101 - and they have little or no editorial support - these books generally look unprofessional and amateurish.
Mad Professor:
Lyle Stuart published a book called ’Winning at Casino Gambling’. The original by Carol Publishing is out of print, but am I told that his own Barricade Books has re-released a heavily revised version. It chronicles ten winning LV craps/baccarat trips that he made in ’79 and ’80.

Tragedy in Burbank today after a three car accident on Highway 99took the lives of Wheel of Fortune host and his longtime sidekick, Vanna White.
The two were travelling together after a production meeting and were on their way back to studio when a completely bizarre and wholly unpredictable series of events ended in freeway chaos and the deaths of Sajak, White, and three others of no consequence as they lacked celebrity status.
A truck carrying chicken coops swerved on an on-ramp to avoid a pair of iguanas that happened onto the freeway. This caused his cargo to escape, flying everywhere and obscuring driver vision.
